On my way to Ulaan Baator (UB), I stopped in the nice Ulan Ude (UU). I liked this town with hills all around. It reminded me Launceston in Tasmania (Australia). UU is much bigger (350 000 inhbts) but spreaded. Then it's not too much people in the same area. I felt the same relax atmosphere.
UU is the capital of Bouriaty. Buriat people are an ethnic group (coming from Mongolia long time ago) living in Russia. The most important ethnic group. In the 30's they were persecuted by communists and most of the datsan (Buddist temples) have been destroyed.
Today, buriat buddhism re-born and they rebuild datsan.
I spent a pleasant w.e in this town. I stayed in a suburb, in a nice Guest House (Bailakl Ethnic Hostel), reaching by minibus (about 20mn).
I ate buuz who is a traditional buriat meal (juicy ravioli with minced lamb). Very good ;-)
And now, 10 hours by bus later, I left Russia and arrived in Mongolia! At the russian immigration, they spent 10 mn checking my passport, I have no idea why. But well, they gave it back to me.
Need to check the differents tours and go for a 7 or 10 days trip or so.
10h plus tard me voila arrive.
See you
